It sounds simple: wet hair, lather up the shampoo, condition, rinse and you're done. But did you know that the comb you use, the water temperature you choose and how you apply your shampoo can really make a difference? Australian Hairdresser of the Year 2006, Anthony Nader (pictured), tells us the correct way to clean our locks.
1. Before washing your hair, comb it with a wide tooth comb. "This will help assist the detangling process once you have shampooed and conditioned," says Nader.
2. Thoroughly wet your hair with tepid water. "This is best as most shampoos are designed to lather and activate most effectively with warm water," explains Nader. "Very hot water will damage your hair and scalp."
3. Next, use shampoo prescribed for your hair type. How much product to use? According to Nader, less is always more. Do not apply from the bottle directly onto your hair, rub a small amount of shampoo gently into your palms and distribute evenly over your scalp. Use a gentle "massaging" motion to move the shampoo through your roots. Rinse thoroughly then repeat.
4. As with your shampoo find a conditioner prescribed to your hairs needs. "For example, if your hair is lacking in moisture, or protein for strength, use an appropriate conditioner," suggests Nader. Apply from the ends taking care not to apply too much on the roots as this can eliminate body and cause lifelessness. Let the conditioner do its stuff and leave for a few minutes then rinse thoroughly.
Tip: always rinse twice as long as you think you need to. This will ensure you're not left with any residue.
5. Finally, if you can handle it, opt for a quick rinse under cool water once you have thoroughly rinsed the conditioner out, to protect the natural oils and close the cuticle for shinier hair.
6. Pat your hair dry. Don't rub as this may cause breakage and tangles! Gently comb through (never use a brush) with a wide-toothed comb and then place your hair in a towel turban until you are ready to style.
