While summer is the perfect time to head outside and enjoy the sunshine, it's also the time when your hair is most susceptible to sun damage. Hair experts John Horrocks of Global Hair in Sydney's Paddington, and Evin Austin share their summer-hair advice.
Can the sun damage hair like it can your skin?
Evan Austin: ''Yes, it actually burns the outside layer [cuticle] if exposed to the sun for too long. If the hair is split or has a lot of highlights it is more susceptible to damage than healthy, well maintained hair. You know when your hair is burnt because it becomes dry, brittle and looses its shine. The colour may also fade.''
Which celebs should we look to for summer styling inspiration?
John Horrocks: ''Giselle Bundchen. Who doesn't want those luscious locks? Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Hawkins are the perfect examples of feminine, soft hair with body and bounce. For an edgier look Rihanna is something to inspire to.''
My blonde hair goes a funny colour in summer. Why?
Evin Austin: ''Chlorine in the pool nowadays rarely affects the colour of blondes, however if the highlights contain a lot of bleach, they can, on the rare occasion give off a greenish hue. If this happens I always suggest shampooing the hair immediately after swimming with Instant Clear from L'Oréal Professionnel."
I love wearing hats, but how do I get rid of hat hair when the sun goes down?
