How to get the "victory roll" hairstyle

Friday, April 24, 2009

We go behind-the-scenes at the Maise spring-summer fashion show and chat with fashion hair maestro Stephen Foyle, from salon-only brand Kevin Murphy, on how to get the "victory roll" hairstyle.

What was your inspiration for the hairstyle?
Early 1950s rockabilly girl meets Japanese samurai! The brief was "street fighter" so this is my take on that.

How would you best describe a victory-role girl?
She definitely has a lot of 'tude and a real sexy self-confidence.

What style products did you use to create the look?
Kevin Murphy (KM) Session Spray, KM Motion Lotion and KM Easy Rider.

You must have used endless amounts of hairspray to hold the roles in place. If so how many cans?
Absolutely! The rolls were pretty much natural-disaster proof after we had finished. Surprisingly enough though, we probably only went through about three cans though, 'cos the better-quality sprays definitely pack more of punch for less usage.

Can you give us a step-by-step guide on how to create the look at home?

Step one: Section the top part of your hair up and tie the rest in a super-tight low pony tail.

Step two: With the top section of the hair, the secret is to set the hair in KM rollers or hot rollers for 10-15 minutes.

Step three: Brush out the hair when it's set and wrap the hair around your fingers to form the victory rolls, pull a little from the front of one roll and she is ready to go.

Finally, what are the hair confessions of Stephen Foyle?
I'd tell you but I don't like sharing it.
