Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) There are five types of AHAs: glycolic, lactic, citric, malic and tartaric. They're all forms of chemical exfoliants that "unglue" dead cells from the skin's outer layer. The aim of this is to allow healthier cells to come to the surface, while at the same time improving skin texture and unclogging pores.

Beta hydrox acid (BHA) There is only one Beta hydroxy acid, and that's salicylic acid. It also works to "unglue" dead cells, but its difference is that it's oil-soluble (while AHAs are water-soluble), making it better for blemished skin, while AHAs are better for dry or sun-damaged skin.

Antioxidants Antioxidants are molecules that "mop up" and protect the skin by absorbing radiation from the sun (free radicals). Vitamins A, C, E, green tea and thiotic acid are antioxidants.
