Protecting your skin from the elements gives a great winter base. Simply employ these five ways to winter-proof your make-up.
- Use a heavyweight moisturiser
It's a fact that skin dries out in cold weather. So to keep your skin in tip-top condition, keep it fully hydrated with a rich daytime repair cream beneath your foundation. It acts as a protective barrier, fighting against the cold and soothing and insulating against the wind and rain.
"A super-rich repair cream is so great for rehydrating skin," says make-up artist Katrina Raftery. "I put it on after a shower. It gets my skin back in order during winter."
- Use a specialist night cream
Using a high-intensity treatment at night adds an extra injection of moisture and keeps your skin soft for make-up application the next morning. Simply smooth on a specialist cream or serum after cleansing to rejuvenate a dry and tight epidermis.

For a simple DIY skin boost, add a natural oil to your usual product."Pour some vitamin E or jojoba oil into your face moisturiser," says make-up artist Amy Fiebig. "It's great if your skin gets really dry."
- Keep your base light during winter
No need to go for heavy make-up when the temperature dropsa sheer base makes skin look more youthful, whatever the weather. "Use a super sheer foundation," says make-up artist Paddy Puttock. "Just a bit on your chin, a bit on your nose and use it as a concealer. That's all you need."
- Rub away dead skin
A calming clay mask will gently remove dead cells for a glowing winter visage. If you want to warm up in hot water, use a milk bath to smooth your skin. Filled with natural milk proteins you'll slough away dead winter skin in a milk bath without even noticing.
"A light scrub is great if you want to go out with fresh-looking skin," Katrina says. "Dead cells will have gone, and it looks like you've given your face a good scrub."
- Get kissable lips
Remove winter make-up with a gentle cream cleanser with essential oils, smearing on lip balm at the first hint of dryness. "It's totally fine to use a cheap lip balm," Amy says. "I really believe they are as good as the more-expensive products."
