Road test: Getting Paparazzi-ready workshop

10:30 AEST Fri Feb 3 2012
Your Beauty Spot producer Holly Enriquez attended the Napoleon Perdis Paparazzi Ready Personal Make-up Skills Workshop to glean some tips from the pros.

The claim: The Paparazzi Ready Personal Make-up Skills Workshop promises that you'll "learn the basics of make-up application as designed by Napoleon Perdis. Prepare for a special occasion, brush up on your skills or just boost your self-confidence.

"Whatever your motivation, you will master everything from lipstick and eye techniques to foundation and bronzer application, and how to enhance your natural beauty for day and night."

The verdict
I have become a little uninspired by my beauty routine recently and thought I could use a bit of a technique (and product) refresh so I enrolled in the six-hour Napoleon Perdis Make-up skills course, which teaches you to:

  • select the best foundation shade for you;
  • apply primer and foundation and which tools to use;
  • execute different eyeshadow looks;
  • choose the right lipstick to suit the season, your mood or occasion; and
  • enhance your best features.

Our day began with an intro to skin care including cleansing, toning, moisturising, using a facial serum and then prepping the skin for make-up with a primer. We were then each given a foundation to suit our skin type (mine was the palest available — must get to the beach soon) and shown how to apply with a foundation brush. This is just about where my usual beauty routine ends — but it was only just the beginning!

Next we were shown how to highlight, conceal and contour, using the array of brushes that were placed in front of us, followed by a wisp of blush on the apple of the cheeks.

The final touch was the first eye look for the daytime which was a light eyeshadow, lick of mascara and eyeliner around the rim. And our transformation was complete.

After lunch when we returned to our stations, removed our make-up and then recreated the look over again. We were then taught our second eye look — a hot smoky eye. I found this the most useful tip of the course as countless times I have walked out my front door looking more like Taylor Momsen than Kim Kardashian.

The final touch was a cheeky fire-engine red lip and we were ready to hit the town (if it wasn't 4pm). We all admired our creations in the mirror &3151; even under fluorescent lights, we looked pretty great!

After the course I went straight home, upturned my beauty draws and threw away the old brushes and half-used make-up that I no longer use, which felt great! I'm definitely feeling more inspired now and have the knowledge (and written instructions) to recreate two hot make-up looks at home.

Holly attended the one-day workshop in Alexandria, Sydney. The course costs $229 and students are entitled to a 20 percent discount on the day. For more information, visit http://www.napoleonmakeupacademy.com.au.
