Understanding face shapes

Tuesday, March 20, 2007
You dress to suit your body shape, so why not do your make-up and hair to suit your face shape too? The first step in doing this? Identifying which shape you have ...

  • Oval. This face shape is considered the "perfect" shape because of its symmetry. Very little — if any — contouring is needed as it's well balanced (slightly broader at cheeks, and narrower at forehead and chin, and overall is longer than wide). Celebrity example: Elle Macpherson

  • Round. A round face is usually wider than an oval face, and it has fuller cheeks and a rounded chin. People with round faces tend to look more youthful. Celebrity example: Christina Ricci

  • Heart or inverted triangle. Just like the second name suggests, this face shape is wider at the forehead and curves to a pointed chin. Celebrity example: Reese Witherspoon

  • Square. While technically not "square", this face shape does have a similar width between the forehead, cheeks and jaw. Square faces also tend to have a square-looking hairline. Celebrity example: Kristin Davis

  • Pear or triangle. This face shape, while oval-ish, has a narrower forehead than jaw line, making it look a little angular. Celebrity example: Jennifer Aniston

  • Long. This face shape also appears very oval, but is an elongated version. People with long faces tend to have a much higher forehead and narrow chin. Celebrity example: Sarah Jessica Parker
