Think applying false lashes is best left to the experts? Think again. With a bit of expert know-how, luscious, Kim Kardashianesque-lashes can be yours.
We ask MAC Cosmetics senior make-up artist Nicola Burford for her pro tips on how to achieve the ultimate in flutterbility.
1. The type of false lash you choose is important. "You can create many different eye shapes using lashes," says Burford. "If you're after a winged look, choose lashes that are longer at the outer edge of the lash and shorter and more tapered on the inner edges." Rounder eye shapes should opt for lashes that form a natural arc. "Choose longer lashes through the centre and shorter on the outer ends," suggests Burford.
2. The first obstacle in false-lash application is getting the lash strips out of the packet without damaging them. "The best way to remove lashes from packaging is to gently push them out with the base of the thumbs," says Burford.
3. It's best to prepare your eyes before applying the false lashes. Start with a fine line of eyeliner along the upper lash line. Next, curl lashes using a lash curler, then finish with a slick or two of black mascara.
4. You may need to trim your false lashes to suit your eye shape and lash size, so make sure you measure your lashes against your upper lash line before gluing. When re-sizing your false lashes, Burford advises trimming from the outer edge of the false lash rather than the inner edge. "Trimming the inner width will spoil the shape of the lash," she says.
5. To adhere your lashes, you'll need non-irritating surgical glue such as Duo Adhesive (do not use any other kind of glue or you'll risk harming your eyes). Burford advises applying a thin line of glue in even amounts along the upper lash line, not the false lash itself. Then in front of a mirror, tilt your head backwards and looking down into the mirror, hold the tip of the false lash in your fingers and push it gently into your natural lash line. "Use the end of an eye make-up brush or tweezers to help place the false lash into the root of the natural lashes," advises Burford.
6. Allow two or three minutes for the glue to dry.
7. Once lashes are dry, Burford suggests using your thumb to gently push your natural lashes into the false lash. "It gives the most natural, realistic finish," she says.
