How to pamper your pooch

Thursday, September 30, 2010
When it comes to beautifying, your four-legged friends shouldn't be forgotten! Their grooming routines should differ vastly from your own, so we asked the pros the best way to make Fido and Fidette pretty.

1. "Use a low-level pH shampoo," says Dogs @ Play director, Amanda Raine. "Dogs' skin is as sensitive as a baby's." What that means: the shampoo you use on your hair may not be suitable for your fury friend.

2. "Regular brushing will go part the way to helping keep the coat knot free and the skin free of diseases and parasites, such as fleas," explains Anneke van den Broek, director of pet-care brand, Rufus & Coco. "Check with your vet or pet shop for a comb that suits your dog's coat, as there are lots to choose from."

3. Detangling conditioner isn't just for humans. "Rufus & Coco 4 in 1 Pamper Spray [is a] wonder spray because it has four actions in one: it deodorises, detangles, puts a gloss on the coat and also has a UV filter," says van den Broek.

4. Eyes and ears need special attention. "Salt water is great for bathing staining around the eyes, as well as cleaning cuts and scratches," says Raine. "And regularly wipe your dogs ears with a cotton-wool square to help prevent ear infections."

5. Another ear-cleaning tip from Raine: when washing your pup, put a cotton bud in each ear to help keep the water out. Remove when bath time's over.

6. Doggy nails require clippers designed for the purpose (human scissors won't, erm, cut it!). "Ask a friend to help hold your furry mate," suggests van den Broek. "Only clip the tip of each nail, being careful to stop short of the quick where the blood vessels are." Feeling hesitant? Leave it to the pros, or ask your vet to show you the correct technique the first time, especially if your dog has dark nails.

7. Sometimes fur around the eyes needs a trim. If you're going to DIY, make sure you use grooming scissors (they have rounded ends to help avoid accidents).

8. Prefer to send your companion to a groomer for pampering? Then follow Raine's advice: "Shop around for a groomer you can relate to, and check their set-up — do they cage dogs all day, or groom by appointment?"
