Short cuts: how to carry off the hottest crops this season

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Considering going for the chop? From edgy urban rock chic to girl-next-door bobs with a twist, VO5 short-hair expert, Heath Massi, explains how to get the hottest short hair styles this season.

When Posh Spice had her long locks snipped into a sexy asymmetrical style, it made headlines worldwide: a quick cut was all it took to relaunch her career as a fashion-forward style guru and within months, her "Pob" was the most requested cut at salons all over the world — and with good reason, says V05 short-hair expert Heath Massi.

"With any short hair style there are just a few things you will need to keep your style looking super slick," Heath says. "The first is an amazing hair stylist who can give you the perfect cut; the second is a versatile range of styling products." If you're tempted to tame longer tresses, here's what's hot in hair.

In the P!nk
This songstress knows that a sexy cut can revamp a tired image. "To achieve P!nk's fluffy and funky look, a light styling product is required," Heath says. "My favourite product for this style is the VO5 Surf Style [$7.99] — it's light and doesn't leave a sticky residue in the hair."

P!nk's short 'do will suit those looking for a low-maintenance style: simply dry hair off, apply a small amount of Surf Style and work it through the hair until you've preened it to your liking.

Sideways
"A major trend for short hair at the moment is the asymmetrical style as worn by Ruby Rose," Heath says. To copy her urban rock-chic look, apply a styling wax to dry hair, and work it roughly through the hair to create shine and texture. "Leave it a little messy and work the strands around the face," Heath advises.

Coming of age
"No matter what your age, a short crop can be the perfect way to frame and flatter your face," says Heath, who nominates Jamie Lee Curtis' classy crop as a winner. How do you get her look? Roughly blow-dry the hair and work through a matte finishing product. "Don't flatten hair to the head — allow it to have volume and only use a small amount of product to start with, only adding more if required," says Heath.

Chin-chin
The bob is back with a vengeance thanks to celebs like Katie Holmes and Ginnifer Goodwin. Mousse is the key to styling bob-length hair — apply a golf-ball size amount to damp hair, then blow-dry using a round brush for extra volume and shape.

"Part hair to the side and run fingers through to texturise," Health says. "Or you could go glam and a bit flirty and fun like Mena Suvari. To get her look, apply mousse and blow-dry in sections, then set hair with a medium-barrel curling tong, working the curls towards the back of the head. Run your fingers through your hair and tease the crown for maximum volume before setting with hairspray."

Great for short straight hair....but what about the curly heads? Not all of us want long curly locks....and not all these short styles translate to curly. Some ideas please? Short curly and easy....? (and yes, photos of the styles-celebs discussed would be helpful) ta
Thanks for the know-how, although photos of the styles you were giving directions for would have helped.
So great - no one ever does anything for short hair! Love Heath's tips!
