Long-standing hair care brand Sebastian has just undergone one heck of a makeover. It's out with insipid packaging and that run-of-the mill image and in with a sleek monochrome look with a new feisty edge. And it's set to catch the attention of the most savvy hair aficionados.
To get the lowdown on what's hot in the hair world, why Sebestian is a brand to watch and how to avoid the most common Aussie hair care faux pas, Your Beauty Spot caught up with one of their top stylists, Keah Fitzgerald.
The brand has taken an "edgy" turn with a style described as either "love" or "hate". Describe the hair vibe of the refreshed brand.
Sebastian has been blowing the lid off creativity for over three decades and continues to do so with its "fearless" catch cry. The new range is about breaking down the boundaries between hair and fashion and making it accessible. It's all about individuality and what's going to happen next. People either love what we stand for because we give them an edge over others, or hate us because we're outside of the norm.
Who personifies the brands (celebrity or designer) and why?
Up-and-coming style icons such as Cory Kennedy and Charlotte Ronson personify the brand. They're always looking to try new things and break away from the crowd. These people are the epitome of the edgy, bold and fearless new collection.
What's the key wearable hair trend coming up over the next few months?
It definitely would have to be dishevelled structure. Fashion-forward hair still has to have a design to it but it needs to look effortless which is easier said than done!
What's the most outrageous style that is set to hit catwalks and magazines?
The most outrageous style would have to be what we call at Sebastian "crimped hair", laced with different textures. This style is smooth and gel sleeked on the top of the head to the ear, then the crimped texture busts out from underneath, wider than the body. This is a brave style for the designer to have in their fashion show and only works if the clothing is ultra strong because the hair does become a huge feature.
Sebastian's key product is the whipped mousse. What does this add to everyday hair care and what hair types need it?
This is perfect for hair that is dry, frizzy, and brittle and needs some conditioning and smoothing without weight so that's basically all of us! This product is truly amazing to control the hair in such a way that there is no frizz. The results are either smooth and sleek, if styled that way, or bouncy defined curls; either way leaving the hair feeling like silk.
What is the biggest hair faux pas that Australians tend to make?
The biggest mistake I think Australians make is not using enough styling product to enhance their style and protect their hair from daily turmoil. Nothing makes me cringe more than seeing a beautiful girl with great outfit and fabulous shoes but then her hair looks like she just got out of the shower! We really need to pay more attention to our hair.
What is your recommendation for everyday hair care regime?
For bouncy voluminous hair Sebastian Professional Light Shampoo and Conditioner followed by Potion 9 Lite to offer protection and ongoing treatment to the hair. Then whipped crème to enhance natural movement in the hair. It is imperative to use a shampoo, conditioner, treatment/softener and styling product to look after and get the most out of your hair.
