Road test: Dermalogica Face Mapping.
Aim: To examine and interpret the different zones of skin on the face, thus determining causes of common skin problems.
What happens? The process begins with a comprehensive consultation, covering general health issues, exfoliation history, sun tolerance and lifestyle-related questions. For the examination itself, Face Mapping combines three techniques for analysis: visual examination of the skin, examination of the skin by touch and "reading" of the skin as an indicator of internal organ health and drawing upon the old tradition of Chinese Facial Diagnosis. The skin on the face and neck is divided into 14 zones. Each zone, including the ears, is explored and findings recorded in the form of an actual "map" charting the client's face. The visual examination detects inflammation, breakouts, dilated capillaries and changes in pigmentation. According to the brand, the tactile examination reveals "hot spots" possibly indicating congestion or stress, areas of oiliness or dryness, roughness, follicular congestion, milia forming beneath the skin and other subtle indicators. This record is then used for comparison to the client's skin at the next visit.
Cost: Free with any Dermalogica treatment.
The bottom line: "It was great to have an expert look at my skin and tell me exactly what I should be using on it. I was prescribed a healthy dose of Dermalogica products, and am especially loving the Dermal Clay Cleanser, $20, and MultiVitamin Powerfirm (for eye and lip area), $70. It's been six weeks since my appointment, and my skin is feeling really good." Amy, 31.
